All contenders found themselves stuck firmly in Spidey’s box office web this past weekend. “Spider Man 3” added another $60 million to its tally since debuting one week ago in US theaters. That figure is more than what most flicks garner in a full 3 months in movie houses. This weekend’s totals will put Spidey over the $242 million mark in just one week’s time putting it in line as the top premiere grosser in the US and internationally.
The film’s worldwide market totals have already exceeded $620 million and even though this weekend showed a 60% drop in ticket sales, it is well within the studio’s projection, making the bosses very happy.
“Spider Man 3” has beaten the past record holder for a debut performance. When “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” opened with unprecedented ticket sales, it was thought at the time that it would take at least a year for any other film to knock the Disney flick off the top of the heap. However, in less than a year “Spider Man 3” is the new King of the Hill. The only question remaining is will the third and final “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” recapture the hill? Plus, Spidey also will be getting some serious competition from that big green guy with the opening of “Shrek the Third” coming soon.
In today’s movie climate holding that top spot for more than a couple of weeks is getting harder and harder to do.
