Slice of SciFi #107: Interview with Morena Baccarin of “Stargate SG-1”

May 2, 2007 By Summer Brooks 11 Comments

News Bytes:

  • Cartoon Network will air a Robot Chicken special Star Wars spoof episode on June 17th
  • Sanctuary debuted a sneak preview on May 1st, with the first episode to be released on Mat 14th
  • Is Shrek the best spokesman for a childhood anti-obesity campaign?

Movie Talk: Topher Grace and Thomas Hayden Church give their thoughts on playing Venom and Sandman, respectively, in Spider-Man 3, opening May 4th.

Slice of Trivia: TRIVIA!

TV Talk:
SpaceWorks Entertainment Inc. (Canada), and Circles & Lines GmbH (Germany) are pleased to announce that RTL II is acquiring the Ice Planet series. The Canadian-German co-production is a five season scripted sci-fi drama, with 22 episodes per season. The Canadian broadcaster will be CHUM Television, the same folks who helped produce Charlie Jade.

As we reported this story back in September 2006, Ice Planet stars an ensemble cast including Michael Ironside (Splinter Cell, Total Recall) and German star Ralf Bauer (Winter Solstice, In Bed With The Devil).

Morena Baccarin Interview: Morena Baccarin first wowed the scifi world with her portrayal of Companion Inara Serra in Joss Whedon’s short-lived but fan favorite series, “Firefly”, and the feature film, Serenity. Now, she can be found on SciFi Channel’s long running hit series “Stargate SG-1”, portraying the adult incarnation of Vala’s daughter, Adria.

She joins Michael and Tim for a chat about what it’s like to make an impact in two major scifi series, and more.

Future Talk:
The eagerly awaited first movie in the new “Babylon 5: The Lost Tales” series will be out on DVD on July 31, 2007, and is now available for pre-order.

Listener comments: If you have any suggestions or comments, please let us know. We’ve got plenty of voicemail from fans to listen and respond to, but you’ll hear that in a fresh, separate show.

Hey guys. Just finished listening to the latest show. Evo’s questions about HEROS perked up my ears. It would seem that you missed something. NBC has been posting online comics through thier site for the swason. These books answer alot of the questions that are just passed over on the show. Things like who was pappa petrelli and what is lindermans power. These short graphic novels also go through some of the back story on the heros. I suggest you guys check them out.

    As usual great job everyone!

If you’d like to hear another interview with Morena we (The Signal) did one with her just before Serenity came out. You can find it here…

The AppleTV can output 720p, it’s just the iTunes doesn’t sell 720p content yet. You can find HD content out there and convert it to work on your AppleTV, however, and Apple is hopefully going to be increasing the quality of their stuff.

The problem is that the video iPods don’t yet support 720p, so releasing it would make them incompatible, and releasing two different versions would make it more complex. I’m not sure how easy it would be to get a video iPod to support 720p. It might just need a firmware upgrade, or it could need a whole new processor. They could solve this problem by integrating the iTunes store into the AppleTV, though with a 40GB

There are a ton of hacks out there to get other files, such as Divx files that “fell off a truck” to play on an AppleTV, and they’re relatively easy.

As for Signs, I’m from Lancaster, PA, near Bucks County where the movie is set, and I can tell you that hydrophobic aliens would not ever consider landing here in the summer. It’s about 100% humidity when the corn is high. They’d start fizzing like pop rocks before they had a chance to scare anyone.

Somehow my link does not work for the show, I get one word, Slice, then the the pop up player stops. The download also only sends the one word. Is there a problem with the site today?

I just tried the popup player, the inline player, and the manual download, and they all worked.

Maybe Libsyn was having hiccups when you tried to play it? Or does it happen no matter how many times you’ve tried?

    Hi guys,

I just finished listening to episode #107, and I just gotta say: Mike, I’ve been listening to Slice for quite a while now, and have listened to a lot of your interviews. But I have never heard you sound like a bigger fanboy geek than you did while interviewing Morena! 🙂

    Hey guys

great show. just one request: please save your spoilers for the voicemail show. it is the better forum to spoil shows when people are weeks to years behind on stuff, and i can just delete the voicemail shows from itunes.

    love the interview with morena.

    hate spoliers.

    hope summer’s on the mend.
