The American wing of the BBC is changing its programming look to give it more of a 21st Century feel.
Old time popular shows such as “The Avengers,” “The Saint” and “Benny Hill” will be going bye bye to make room for newer, hipper shows such as “Footballer’s Wives” and “Waking the Dead.”
“We’re undergoing a complete transformation,” stated Garth Ancier, BBC America’s head honcho. “We’ve taken shows like ‘The Avengers’ and ‘The Saint’ off the schedule. We want to present a view of contemporary Britain. It’s what the BBC does best. I’d rather have ‘Wire in the Blood’ than ‘Benny Hill.”
Another change will be the concept of theme night. Each night of programming will spotlight a certain thematic premise to each show. Theme nights will include such things as Murder Monday, or Reality Thursday and Crime-Fighting Fridays.
One of the exciting features that will delight genre fans will be Supernatural Saturday with “Torchwood” being the tentpole program for that theme night. Saturday will feature shows within the sci-fi, fantasy, horror and supernatural genre. This ought to give the SCI FI Channel a run for their money on Saturdays and force them to step up their own programming on Saturday night. After 10PM ET Saturday viewing will move to comedy shows.
For the more salacious minded there is Wicked Wednesday with shows like “Footballer’s Wives,” “Hotel Babylon” and “Goldplated.”
Other nights include Adventure Sunday and Nitro Tuesday.
So, I’ll actually be able to watch “Torchwood” afterall?
I’ve enjoyed the first 4 episodes or so that I’ve watched. It’s about time they brought it to the US so we don’t have to find alternative means.
I have a friend in Europe who sent me the entire first season on DVD and it is great. I hope she does the same for Season Two. 😉
