March 16, 2007 By Sam Sloan 8 Comments

blanchett6.jpgCate Blanchett is said to be in serious negotiations to star opposite Harrison Ford for the new LucasFilm, Steven Spielberg movie tentatively dubbed “Indiana Jones: 4.”

While her role in the film has not been made public, rumor control has it that the Oscar winner may be the mysterious wife of the adventureous archeologist.

What we can tell you is the script is complete, Spielberg is directing, Shia LaBeouf is denying involvement, Paramount is distributing the project and shooting begins June 2007. The other news is a release date of May 22, 2008 has been set.

That’s great if it’s true. That woman is as classy as the most classy thing.

Speaking as an Australian, I hope she plays an Australian in the movie.

Mainly because I’d love to hear her do a 50’s Australian accent (assuming that’s about when the movie will be set).

Watch some old Chips Rafferty movies. You’ll see what I’m talking about.

    She’s 36. He’s 64.

Maybe she could play his daughter instead?

Would hardly be the first time they paired an old man with a woman woman as husband and wife or lovers (or vice versa) in a movie.

Can anybody say Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in “Charade”?

again – Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in “To Catch A Thief”

and there’s Jennifer O’Neill and Gary Grimes in “The Summer of 42”

James Stewart and Kim Novak in “Vertigo”

and the most famous one of all —

Anne Bancroft and Dustin Hoffman in “The Graduate” –
“Are you trying to seduce me Mrs. Robinson?”

It happens all the time in movie making.

Yes, Hollywood has always preferred youth when it comes to women. But most of those movies were made at least 20 years ago. And at least in “The Graduate” the age difference was part of the plot, not just a casting decision. It would be nice to see times change. Of course, Indy and younger women isn’t new, either. Alison Doody was 23 and Ford was 47 when “Last Crusade” was released.

There are plenty of excellent actresses who could be cast as his wife – if that’s actually what they are doing. Heck – Karen Allen is 55. Bring her back! Susan Sarandon (famous for reversing the trend a few times with younger men)? Annette Bening (she’s at least in her 40s)? Sigorney Weaver? Just to name a few.

Or how about this – cast Cate as Marion and Indy’s daughter and spin her off as a female version of him for future movie adventures. Wouldn’t that be fun?

James Stewart and Kim Novak in “Bell, Book and Candle” was the one that distracted me from the movie.

What th… “Bell, Book and Candle” has been optioned for a remake, featuring Alicia Keys?

Summer – tell me it isn’t so!

Justme, I like your idea of having Cate play the daughter that takes over for her dad as the new daring archeologist adventurer…now that would be cool and guarantee a longer life for the Indy franchise as well. Great idea!

More important … are they paying? I may have to keep this so that if they use my idea, I can sue them!!!
