Kyle’s News Brief – Week Ending January 27, 2007

January 27, 2007 By Kyle Nin 3 Comments

This has not been a good last several years for director M. Night Shyamalan. With three box office bombs in a role, “Signs,” “The Village” and “Lady in the Water,” the one-time Hollywood B.O. savior has fallen on hard times with the news that his latest script titled “Green Planet,” after submission to several studios, still lacks a buyer. The script for the movie centers on an alien invasion of Earth by using the planet’s own flora and fauna as a weapon against humanity.

“New Daughter” is a new horror film adapted from John Connolly’s collection of stories called “Nocturnes.” The film is about a dad and his two kids that move into their new home that has been built over a burial mound. Of course weirdness soon transpires. Can anyone say “Poltergeist?”

Actor Brendan Fraser has let fans of “The Mummy” franchise in on a bit of casting news. He says, concerning his involvement in “The Mummy 3” project to date, “I’m still waiting for the call, so we’ll see.”

There will be a big screen adaptation of the survival horror game “Fear Effect.” “The film should begin production later this year,” says producer Mark A. Altman. What kind of movie can fan’s of the game expect? “Sort of ‘The Dirty Dozen’ meets ‘Silent Hill,'” according to Altman.

An unsubstantiated rumor has it that Mrs. Cruise…that is, Katie Holmes will not make a re-appearance as Rachel Dawes in the “Batman Begins” sequel “Dark Knight.” The role of Dawes will be recast. In other Knight facts and rumors, ‘The Penguin’ will not be waddling on set this time around, while the yet-to-be cast role of Harvey Dent (‘Two Face’) and ‘The Joker,’ played by Heath Ledger, will play prominent roles. Just to keep the rumor mill grinding, Jamie Foxx is under consideration for the part of Dent.

“Eli Stone” is a lawyer. It just so happens that he is also a modern-day prophet. This new ABC series is gearing up strong and has hired three-time Emmy Award nominee Victor Garber (Alias) and Jonny Lee Miller (Aeon Flux) to star. Miller will play the role of Stone, while Garner appears as the senior partner of the law firm and the father of Eli Stone’s fiancee. The very pleasing-to-the-eye actress Natasha Henstridge of “Species” fame has also come onboard this supernatural drama to play the fiancee.

The great scifi author Isaac Asimov’s groundbreaking magazine, “Asimov’s Science Fiction” will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. All the the mag’s past editors will contribute short articles to this special double-sized collector’s edition. Also featured will be contributions from such wonderful writers as Gene Wolfe, Michael Swanwick, Karen Joy Fowler, Nancy Kress, Jack McDevitt, Lisa Goldstein, Liz Williams, Mike Resnick, William Barton, Lucius Shepard and Allen M. Steele. Also on tap will be 45 Hugo and 25 Nebula award winning stories that have been reviewed in past editions..and much more. This special April/May 2007 collector’s edition will become available for purchase on March 6, 2007.

As far as B.O. is concerned it was considered an oh-so-ran.

“Signs” was a big “meh” for me, and “The Village” literally pissed me off.

So is “Green Planet” what he wants to do after his “Avatar”?

I need to write some scripts and get them looked at.
