This past weekend the National Society of Film Critics honored Guillermo del Toro’s Spanish-language fantasy film “Pan’s Labyrinth” with the title of ‘Year’s Best Picture’. Already rumored to be the favorite in the Best Foreign Language Film category at this year’s Oscar competition, this choice by the NSFC has tongues wagging about the film’s possible flirtation with the Academy’s Best Picture nominee announcements later this month. While the possibility of this occurring is remote, it does reveal the rising tide of favor toward this film.
“Pan’s Labyrinth” is the memerizing tale of Ofelia, played brilliantly by child star Ivana Baquero, who becomes enraptured by fairy tales and magic lands after coming to live in an enchanted forest with her mother in the era of Franco’s fascist rule in 1944 Spain .
The guys from MoviePulse will be providing a full review of “Pan’s Labyrinth” here on the website tomorrow and our show this coming Wednesday.
