I was happy to see A Time Out of War on the list. The director, Denis Sanders, was one of my professors. He was a very talented director. He won an Academy Award for this film and a second for the film, Czechoslovakia 1968. Unfortunately, he passed away about 19 years ago – much too young – but he went out in style. At his funeral, there was a New Orleans band, playing When the Saints Go Marching On, for the procession.

I am so glad just to see films continue to be selected for preservation, but the list I find is far too short. There are a lot more films out there that deserve to be on the list. Even so, films made prior to a certain date are all nearly gone. It’s good to see that some of those films are not so far gone where they can get preserved.

I do understand that it takes time for these films to be restored and preserved. If I had the extra money, a million or two, I certainly would put a portion of it to film preservation. Film is a way to show how our history has changed, from fashion to attitudes about living. From conceptions on how the future will look to the fact that the future is being made. Film preserves history and it is a moving picture of history. Keep up the good work.
