Captain Jack not only outwitted ole Davey Jones but has just outsold every other debuting DVD to have come out so far this year.
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” scored a record setting first-week sales of 10.5 million units, making it the biggest home video debut of any new release this year, according to Disney, the film’s maker. This record follows on the heels of another: Pirates 2 was also the top box office draw for 2006.
On trade publication Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, Dead Man’s Chest also scored an easy victory, generating an estimated $12.9 million its first week out, according to SciFi Wire.
The sequel also will likely become the top live-action DVD ever, stealing that prize in pirate fashion from is predecessor “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”
