Bollywood Stars Face Court Action After On-Screen Kiss

December 4, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 11 Comments

BHOPAL, India (Reuters Life!) – A kissing scene from a movie starring Bollywood actors Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan has irked a lawyer who has filed a criminal case against them, accusing them of obscenity, he said on Sunday.

Shailendra Dwivedi of Indore, near Bhopal, the capital of central Madhya Pradesh state, said the scene from the movie, titled “Dhoom 2,” lowered the dignity of Indian women and gave an obscene message to youth.

“Bollywood actors are conveying vulgarity in the society,” Dwivedi told Reuters. “These films cannot be watched with our families, they are so vulgar at times.”

A local court accepted Dwivedi’s petition to punish the actors and said it would hear the petitioner on December 11.

The Indian censor board, which certifies all films, released the movie with a “parental discretion” certificate.

A majority of Indians frown upon intimacy in public.

It seems like a joke, doesn’t it? It just goes to show you how backwards the rest of the world is.

Backward or righteous – I guess it depends on one’s worldview. 😉

I think “extreme” is the word you’re looking for. When you can’t even show affection for someone else, that’s the time that it becomes ridiculous.

We must never forget the cultural differences throughout the world and be, if not sensitive to them, at least aware. Within most of the middle Eastern and Indian culture public displays of intimacy or affection are not widely accepted and is behavior best left within the privacy of one’s own abode. Intimacy is not frowned upon in these cultures (far from it as the Kama Sutra is evidence of), but public displays are not readily accepted as normal behavior for an enlightened society.

They better not watch any Disney movies then (like “Cinderella” and “Aladdin”). In the US, they’re about as family as you can get, but I guess in India they get an R-rating?

Perhaps you should consider your own culture before judging others.

I seem to recall an incident at a recent Superbowl that caused uproar in the States, over what we in Europe would have considered a very minor incident.

Well, I think that was ridiculous too. But I don’t remember anyone going to prison for it.

That kiss was nothing yaar….there are so many Hindi flims where kissing is done…Like Rang de basanti etc etc…..then why only dhoom2 I have watched the flim and let me tell you…IT ROCKS!!!!
But I guess different people have different point of views.

well i personally think that specific scene was not suitable for the type of audience who were watching it, due to it being a family film in which it doesn’t befit younger children to watch. i admit it was a wicked film but that part was not needed. What used to be called art has now changed into something ridiculous and which is not needed, the same goes to all films. by copying english films its not gonna make hindi films better . have your own identity and style!

What I’d like to know is, why are the actors accused of it, rather than the writer, director, producer or production company?

i dont understand why the media in Bollywood is making such a problem of one simpel passionate kiss..if that is the case why isnt everyone then talking about the movie jism? seems that the critics dont have a problem with that!
