On the Next Slice of Scifi Show #074 – September 13, 2006

September 9, 2006 By Sam Sloan 2 Comments

Our guest on the next Slice of SciFi is musician/songwriter George Hrab. There is no denying George Hrab’s musical talent. He is unique in that George is an old school musician who plays drums, guitar, bass, and keyboards in addition to writing and singing all of his songs. He has released his fourth independent album titled “Coelacanth”, once again writing and performing on guitar, bass, keys, vocals and drums. This well received album was premiered and performed in its entirety by George’s eight-piece rock, fusion, funk, classical-jazz band known as the Geologic Orchestra (my personal favorite from the album being “The Coelacanth Sigh”). His writing and musical style combines a diversity of influences ranging from Ellington’s A-Train to Zappa’s Zombie Woof.

Modern Drummer magazine has called George’s writing “eclectic” and full of “skewed humor”, and Bryan Beller from the Dweezil Zappa and Mike Keneally bands said of George’s CDs: “Great sounds…I enjoyed the whole thing… and laughed a lot”.

George’s efforts have not only been noticed by the New York Songwriters’ Circle, where he successfully performed at their famed Bitter End showcase, but have also been recognized by various radio and television stations, including performances and interviews on NPR affiliate WDIY, WZZO, RCN-4, WLVR and many others.

Also on the show Summer tells us how George Lucas is not going to let another 20-years go by without keeping his Star Wars franchise fresh in our minds and on our television sets. Sony Pictures makes a new bold move into Internet video distribution and, hold on to your bling, a new 21st Century A-Team is on its way back to the small screen.

In Movie and TV Talk the gang discuss the environmental impact of the newly released original 1954 “Gojira” (Godzilla) feature on DVD and they take us on a trip to “Isla Du Sol,” a new SF drama being given a script greenlight by NBC.

Summer’s crystal ball gets Wil Ferrel in focus as he is joined by Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman in the SF comedy “Stranger Than Fiction.”

Doug is back with three more trivia clips. You may be surprised at who comes out the winner this week.

Slice of SciFi Show #074 will be ready for download on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. Be sure to join us for an hour of SF news, Talk, interviews and fun.

Sweet! I can’t wait. I got to meet George at D*C and he is a great talent, and also a great conversationalist. This should be fun!
