The Borg War

September 8, 2006 By Sam Sloan 10 Comments

bwIt is 17 years after the return home of USS Voyager. The Alpha quadrant has been preparing for the return of the Borg by investing massive R&D in offensive and defensive weaponry. The Federation/Klingon alliance has worn thin, with younger warriors seeking a return to the old glory days of the Empire and its battle-ways. A civil war threatens the Klingon Empire, pitting brother against brother while a Borg Cube stumbles onto a Klingon freighter belonging to the House of Mi’qoch, the clan responsible for the Empire’s anti-Borg development programme. The Mi’qoch clan sends its mightiest warship to investigate.

This is the premise behind the first episode of “The Borg War” now available for FREE download from Machinima.com.

“The Borg War” is directed by Geoffrey James and stars the voices of actors Patrick Stewart, Tim Russ and the late Brock Peters.

In this episode, Picard’s team of experts (including Kleeya, daughter of Seven of Nine) determines that the incursion is the result of an exobiological infection that has taken control of a Borg colony. Despite opposition of the House of Mi’Qoch, Picard plans to use hybrid Federation/Romulan technology to cripple the threat, potentially destroying the Klingon/Federation alliance.

I recently sent an email to the official website for Tim Russ, the actor who played Tuvok of “Star Trek: Voyager. I wanted to give him a heads up that I had revived his voiceover work in Elite Force 2 to make him a co-star (with Patrick Stewart) of BORG WAR, my feature-length animated fan film.

BORG WAR, of course, is a machinima project and my reuse of the game voiceover clips is specifically allowed by the game license as a “new game material. In essence, BORG WAR is an alternative cinematic for the game. However, I was curious about what Russ might think of the movie, since he has some of the best lines.

Anyway, after trading a couple of emails with Russ’s webmaster and sending on URLs for all nine episodes of Borg War, today I got a note from Russ thanking me for the links and telling me that, in his opinion, Borg War is (and I quote) “very cool!

This means a lot to me because I’ve always been impressed with Russ’s work and felt that he did a great job making Tuvok a memorable character that captured the subtle sadness that is the essence of the Vulcan zeitgeist. It’s also a real rush to have one of the original series actors, in a certain sense, “endorse my work.

Just in case you’re curious, the currently-released episodes of BORG WAR can be viewed or downloaded at:

    http://www.machinima.com/films.php?series=Borg%20War

New episodes will be released each Friday on Machinima.com until the Finale (Episode 9) is released on November 3rd.

I made the “feature movie edit” version of Borg War available as a single free download.

The file is full resolution with the Windows Media codec (.wmv file) and is only 360Mb, as opposed to the 900Mb required for the “episodic” version.

I also put up a lower resolution version (smaller file) and a .mp4 version for Apple users.

These are pretty much what’s on the DVD but with some loss of quality due to data compression, a watermark, and no Dolby 5.1 sound.

The free downloads are filed under the “FREE STUFF” on http://www.BorgWarMovie.org.
