“Ice Planet” Update & New Dedicated Website

September 6, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 10 Comments

Ice Planet is a new science fiction drama series starring veteran actor and fan favorite Michael Ironside, with plans to air in October 2006. There will also be a tightly integrated game to accompany the TV show. Spaceworks, the Canadian company behind Ice Planet, have now moved to their new studios in Scarborough, Toronto ready for the filming of Ice Planet to begin.

Among the latest announcements are that the Magellan has now been renamed as “The Artefact”. The story of Ice Planet starts upon the discovery of an “artefact” in the jungle. this artefact then propels our heros to a distant galaxy where they have to try to discover a way back home while trying to understand why they were brought to the Ice Planet.

The Magellan was named after the portugese/spanish sailor who was the first to circumnavigate the globe and who discovered the Magellan Clouds, two galaxies that can only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere.

About Ice-Planet TV:

Ice-Planet TV is the new “unofficial” home for everything Ice Planet and is soley dedicated to this new and highly anticipated SF drama. Every week they hope to bring you a couple of production design art releases from the new series. This week Ice-Panet TV brings you, hot off the press, an image of the Skorp ship. This impressive vehicle belongs to “the villians” of the show. Also they have a design of the planet surface. Each image has a “human” character incorporated in the design to give an idea of scale. Check back to the Ice-Planet TV website every week they hope to have a few more images for you to marvel over.

“The Magellan was named after the portugese/spanish sailor who was the first to circumnavigate the globe”. Fernão Magalhães, your Magellan, was really the first one to circumnavigate the globe. But he was portuguese. there’s no doubt about this. it’s idiotic to have “portuguese/spanish”.

It is not an idiotic statement in the least. Magellan was Portuguese in the service of Spain at the time of his famous voyage. Therefore, history records him as a Portuguese/Spanish sailor.

“Portuguese sailor in the service of the Spanish Armada”.

Many thanks for the recognition guys.
Thought my article would generate some cool comments about the concept art work but …. 🙂

Just to put the record straight, Magellan was Portugese but was sacked for failing to follow orders. He then changed nationality.

Seriously though, what do you think of the artwork?

I’ve seen the original pilot to Ice Planet on DVD. It was released on DVD in Australia at the end of 2004. Thought it was pretty good, but got a little hard to follow towards the end of the show. I’m really glad to see they are having another go at it and Michael Ironside is a grate choice as the commander, I loved him in Starship Troopers. Here is a copy of the DVD cover. I think you can pickup a copy of the DVD on ebay.com.au

Saw the film too. It showed a lot of promise. It was originally made in Germany in 2001 as a pilot but was never picked up.

Judging by what I have seen about this new production we are in for a strong 5 year story….

Looked at the Australian DVD cover, its slightly different frm the European one. Bit more graphics on top.

More pictures are being uploaded into the site as I type this.
Some views of the Artifact’s interior corridor, a iniform and another landscape.
More pictures will be added every week, we’re hoping for some behind the scenes pictures as well.

    Hi guys,
    just a quick hello!
… more concept art has been released to us!
Some more art work surrounding the Skorp mother ship is now available to view.

I’m biased, but I gotta say I do like the look of the bad guys ship, I really do!!

    The original Pilot.
I’ve seen that pilot, I own the DVD.;-)
I’m also a fan of Wes Studi, the original Commander Trager, but after all said and done, the new show with Mr. Ironside… looks to be a very exciting.

    Helo again.

things went quiet for a while with the production but it all seems to be back on track.
The story has changed somewhat from the 2001 pilot and now has more in common with “Lost” than “Lost in Space” but the concept looks interesting. Filming starts at the end of January with the mobile game being released at the beginning of the series and the XBOX360 game being released at the end of series 1.
More cast details have been released and more will follow.
