Reality, Comedy and Dance Rule This Weekend

August 14, 2006 By Sam Sloan 2 Comments

Moviegoers were ready for a mixture of genre’s this weekend at their local theaters all across the globe. Will Ferrell’s Nascar spoof “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” was still number 1 for two weeks in a row. The mix of ballet and hip-hop, “Step Up” came in at a surprising second place, and Oliver Stone’s serious, apolitical look at 9/11 in “World Trade Center” was number 3.

However, SciFi/Fantasy and Horror were still to be found in the Top 10 B.O. features with “Barnyard” and “Pulse” rounding out the Top 5.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” Tim Allen’s “Zoom” and “Monster House” all held their own and stayed in the list of top-rated movie favorites over the last 3 days.

We will have full stats later in the week.

Side note: Pulse is remake of the Japanese version (kind of like “The Ring” and “The Grudge”). So far, most critics seem to agree that the original was better (which seems to be true for most foreign movies remade for the Hollywood experience: something just seems to be lost in translation, whether because of context or lack of interest by Hollywood writers regurgitating someone else’s work for English audiences).

I’m going to stick the original on my Netflix list and see how it is.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I really enjoyed the original version from Japan of The Ring and The Grudge. The American versions were quite second rate compared to the originals.
