McCaffrey’s Pern Getting Big Screen Treatment

May 25, 2006 By Kyle Nin 9 Comments

We have great news for all fans of Hugo-award winning author and Sci-Fi Hall of Fame inductee Anne McCaffrey. Her bestselling series of novels “The Dragonriders of Pern” has been optioned by Copperheart Entertainment for full-feature film production.

Originally opted by Battlestar Galactica’s Ronald D. Moore, the 19-book series fell into the hands of Copperheart after Moore’s efforts shifted to getting BSG into production as a television series and Moores insistance on keeping McCaffrey’s original mythical concepts in place. The studio at the time wanted to tone that down.

Under the leadership of Steve Hoban at Cooperheart, “Pern’s” mythos will hopefully stay in tact.

This is awesome news! I have been waiting for a “big screen” version of this series for a LONG time now. I kept thinking that it would be after Anne died since she is so insistent on making sure that HER dragons are done right.

Please keep us informed of news about this as it becomes available! 🙂

Oh please please please don’t ruin this one! The only one that I’m looking forward to more is Ender’s Game.

Moore needs to clone himself so that he can do all these things at once.

If they do it right, this could be incredible. I agree with Lila S. “Oh please please please don’t ruin this one!”

Slice of SciFi ROCKS! You guys do such a great job of getting the SciFi news out.

O my dog! As long as Anne has a hand in it, it might turn out alright… I’m really hoping she can make them do it her way ~ as Lila S. says, please don’t ruin it! They are fantastic books, amazing characters… It needs to be done right!
That said… who to cast for F’lar?
Would an entire cast of unknowns be asking too much?

Don’t worry. Todd McCaffrey will likely oversee the building of the script, and may have parts in writing it. Anne will of course oversee Todd, but not that much since he has prooved a confident writer of Pern. I know who the Director is, but I cannot tell you. He is an Oscar Award winner, and a Pern fan who is just as adamant of keeping Pern true. 🙂

Hmm…Peter Jackson would be a good choice for director.

Milla Jovovich for Lessa, mebbe? Dunno…she ain’t zactly oscar material, but she’s got the look. Another, perhaps better choice would be the actress who played Galadriel in Lord of the Rings (is it Kate Blanchett?)

    Ian McClellan for Robinton, definately.

Peter Jackson is involved in two movies in Pre-production. One being Halo. I doubt very much he is going to have time to do Pern. Something that big will require a Director free of anything else.

Terrible choice for actors. I think most of the actors should be unknowns.

Get this one right and Ms. McCaffrey’s fans will go to war for you. Get it wrong and we will scream for your blood. 😉 My request? Do it right or don’t do it.

Although I would love to see a movie (done right), I am hesitant. Can the movie ever match my imagination? No matter what, some will be disappointed and others love it. Good luck! I look forward to it.
