iTunes Gets FOXy

May 11, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 1 Comment

Firefly will not be the only new thing iTunes will be offering its customer base this year. The download giant from Apple will be making available a bevy of programming ranging from scifi to comedy and drama to campy classics.

FOX and Apple have come to an agreement of late and now fans will be able to download from their computers some of their favorite programs like the cult-classic and purposely campy “Lost in Space” and that ever perky vampire killer, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” starring Sarah Michelle Geller.

iTunes will also offer up newer FOX and F/X programs such as “24” starring Keifer Sutherland as agent Jack Bauer, “The Shield” with Michael Chiklis and the new FOX hit “Prison Break” which features the rising Hollywood actors Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller. Of course the crown jewel for scifi fans is the addition of “Firefly” to the iTunes playlist.

This partnership will include shows from the News Corporation-owned cable networks Speed and Fuel TV also. Users can also download episodes of FX’s comedy “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” unscripted shows “30 Days,” “Black/White” and “Unanimous” and, for the testosterone driven audience, the Pamela Anderson sitcom “Stacked.”

FOX now joins a growing list of networks and studios that have joined the Apple/iTunes downloading family making much of their library available at the cost of $1.99 per downloaded episode or segment.

There may be a downside to this. The shows that they have released are “buy the entire season” type. Meaning that you have to buy all the episodes for the season in question.

For Lost in Space, that’s 30 episodes. At least they took $10 off the cost on that show, so the first season only costs $50 instead of $60. However, that’s still pretty expensive for less than TiVo quality shows.

It would be nice if they offered a deal where you could get the DVD box set for a little more. I wouldn’t mind that. Save’s me the process of transcoding the episodes myself. 🙂
