Tarzan the Broadway Musical

May 10, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 1 Comment

From Disney comes the Broadway musical adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs classic tale of “Tarzan the Ape Man.” The play however, will actually be based on the 1999 animation feature film.

What Disney did for “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast” they are hoping to do all over again with this much loved story about an infant marooned and orphaned on the shores of West Africa after he loses his parents in a shipwreck. The helpless baby is taken under the protection of a gorilla tribe and becomes part of their family. When he eventually encounters his first human – Jane Porter, a curious young explorer – both their world’s are transformed forever.

The play will be under the watchful eye of famed director Thomas Schumacker with the musical score written and orchestrated by seven time Grammy Award winner Phil Collins.

Proving that there is life after losing American Idol, the one-time contestant of that show, Josh Strickland stars as Tarzan with Jenn Gambatese taking on the role of Jane.

Disney has poured $15 million into this production, a sum that is generally reserved for film presentations and the execs are counting on a huge draw during its run at the Richard Rogers Theater on The Great White Way.
