“Threshold” on DVD

“Threshold” on DVD

May 7, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 1 Comment

Question? Why would anyone want to invest their hard-earned bucks into a DVD set of a program that only aired a few shows and left you hanging as to the outcome?

Well, it would seem the good folks over at CBS Paramount think there are enough fans of their excellent, but very short-lived TV show “Threshold” to warrant a release on DVD. And you know what? I’m one of those willing to go out, lay down my money and buy it.

“Threshold” was a very well written, produced, and acted scifi drama that centered on a team of assembled experts from a variety of professional modalities investigating an alien threat to the existence of humankind.

The cast was headed up by actress Carla Gugino (Sin City) as a government worst-case senario analyst named Dr. Molly Anne Caffrey. Her co-stars were a fine list of actors including Brent Spiner, Peter Dinklage, Charles S. Dutton, Rob Benedict and Brian Van Holt.

Their jobs were to decipher the mystery and intention of the aliens and to discover, through science and covert military operations how to thwart the expected coming alien invasion, which had already begun on a small scale aboard a US Naval vessel out in the middle of the ocean.

The program was one of the best new offings of this past season but didn’t survive but a few viewings. “Threshold – The Complete Season” which will include those episodes filmed but not seen by American audiences will go on sale August 22, 2006.

My recommendation? Go buy the DVD Complete Season and perhaps, just perhaps, if the DVD sales go through the roof, CBS Paramount, or someone over at the parent company Viacom — are you listening Les?…will realize what an awlful mistake they made and re-introduce the show back into the schedule, or even consider making a full-length feature film for theatrical release.

I would have to agree. Granted, I know I’m going to be royally pissed if (and I think this is a given) the season leaves me hanging, but I have to know where this was going. With three new S/F shows this past fall (Threshold, Invasion, and Surface) and a limited time to watch TV, I went in with the following plan in mind: watch the pilot for each only and decide which ones to watch. Threshold was the only one that blew me away from the beginning. I liked Invasion, and still watch it, but I’ll admit it was iffy at first. Sorry, Surface, but you couldn’t hold my attention through the second commercial break. I’m sure it’s my fault that they cancelled Threshold early: anything I really like seems to get the axed.

Although I can’t really see this coming back to TV, maybe a feature movie (a la Serenity) might be in order. No cool name I can think of like “Browncoats”, though. Infected appears to be taken (Thanks, Scott Sigler!!!). Whatever the movement, I’ll be there with bells on!
