Non-subscription based DVRs:
Yep, there are such things, I own one. It’s a Pioneer machine that has an 80GB harddrive as well as being able to burn DVD-R/RW. You can record andd watch at the same time, it has the ability to communicate with your cable/satellite/other boxes so you can access the listings to help set up your recording.
I’d imagine this isn’t as slick as what you could probably do with a subscription-based DVR (like TiVo), I can’t tell it to record all showings of “BSG” for example, I’d have to find the correct time and set it up that way.
However, this beats the utter piss out of a VHS – may you R.I.P. you outdated, crappy piece of technology!
