“V” Is Victorious But Not Overwhelming

March 19, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 2 Comments

The big screen weekend feature “V for Vendetta” has faired well at the box office this weekend but the projected totals are looking to be a bit shy from expectations.

The blockbuster film stars Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving and John Hurt in a futuristic England run under a facists-type regime. A young woman, saved by the mysterious revolutionary simply known as “V” joins forces with the masked pseudo-hero to fight against the oppressive government.

“V for Vendetta” opened on Friday simultaneously on IMAX and conventional screens to a pretty good showing, however, with much of the Rocky Mountain, Plains and Midwest States socked in with a one to two foot blizzard this weekend the hoped for revenues for its opening foray will be less than anticipated. Variety is estimating a box office take of around $26.1 million, which isn’t too bad for a March release but less than one would expect from a film of this stature and star-power.

    Saw it this morning.
Very cool. I highly recommend it.
Will see it again. Great to see John Hurt in this, seeing as how he was in the remake of “1984.

This movie was much better than I was expecting. I would go see it again. I expected it to be good. I didn’t think it would make me want to grab my torch and pitchfork. V himself was confounding and beautiful in a way I would never have guessed.
