“Invasion” Getting Better

March 19, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 4 Comments

I have to give out props to the execs over at ABC. Most of us out here who’s job it is to critique new films and television programs were extremely hard on this new series from the mind of Shaun Cassidy called “Invasion.” I know I was. But, as all reviewers should do, I have not missed an episode so that I could see where the show was going, how it would or would not develop its characters and storylines. But, to be honest with you I haven’t held out much hope for the show… until recently.

Evidently, and this is a rarity, the execs were on to something. They had faith in their product when very few of us did. They have stuck with the program and it is starting to pay off.

Over the last three episodes the plot has really become interesting, exciting and intriqing. The dynamic between Tom and his wife, as she comes to grips with what she has become is great TV, and now that her son has come to realize just what she is and that she did not become that by choice but was forced by Tom…..well look out for what is coming next. Also, by beginning to focus a little more on the lives of those outcast changlings on the island the show has taken on a really nice conspiratory tone that can only bode well for its lasting at least another season.

So, I have to give two-thumbs up to ABC for hanging in there. The show had a very slow start, but is now starting to capture its audience. Perhaps we reviewers should listen a little more to our own ranting about how networks don’t give their new shows the time they need to develop a following and hold back some of our destructive critism until the show truly proves to be a dud….but if we all did that then we would be out of a job and have to really work for a living.

So, I recommend that if you have never seen it, start watching. If you started but got bored with it, tune back in, you might be surprised at how really well written and acted it is becoming. Either way, “Invasion” returns to ABC’s Wednesday night lineup in April after a short break.

Me and the missus have been following this one from the start as she is a big fan of ‘Cole from Sunset Beach’ aka Addy Cibrian. It’s been a strange one- it got very boring at times and has been exceedingly frustrating all the way through. I was beginning to loathe the main characters as the show seemed to focus on their marital issues to the detriment of the key story, the invasion mystery.
However, we had felt similar frustration through the whole of the first series of lost- which eventually paid off. In addition, the show definitely has something going on which keeps people coming back. I think it’s good though that they have finally injected some substance into it though because everyone’s tolerance for soapy gumbo has a limit.
In any case, it is something to look forward to every week, and now BSG and SG1 are over till later in the year- it is sorely needed.

I’m curious about deputy Sirk. Will his arm ever grow back? How will he deal with his inappropriate feelings towards Kira?

I never could figure out why you (the SofSF team in general) were so down on this, and not on Surface. They were very similar in that they started out weak, and only got good after some time. I like both of these series, giving each it’s fair chance. When sci-fi makes up such a small percentage of TV, we really need to give all of these shows a little slack.

We at SoSF don’t feel any show, scifi or not, should be given slack if it isn’t well written, well directed and well acted. And you have to be honest, both Surface and Invasion started out pretty slow and pretty bad. Surface recovered and began getting better after 3 or 4 episodes to the point where it became really interesting. Invasion has taken longer, almost a whole season, but it too is finally coming around to where the writing and character development is getting better the plots are more captivating and less soap operary.

It has taken awhile but Invasion is becoming the kind of show I can be happy to watch and encourage others to do so as well.
