Death Is Just a Breath Away

March 18, 2006 By S. K. Sloan 3 Comments

Nothing can prepare you for the epidemic that could wipe out the entire planet

Something that is becoming quite common these days in Hollywood is a studio taking a film from Japan and remaking it to fit Western culture and characters.

So far we have seen this occur with “The Ring” and “The Ring 2,” “Dark Water,” “The Grudge” 1 and 2, as well as “Lake House” and “The Departed.”

Now New Line’s Jeff Katz and George Waud are traveling down that same road by taking another made in Japan product and turning it into a westernized film. This one is called “Infection.”

Originally released in 2004 in Japan under the title “Kansen,” the Western version will be set in an isolated hospital fraught with staffing mistakes and errors that is being overrun by a fast spreading infection of supernatural origin.

The Japanese version was excellent in its delivery, one can only hope that since the original producer, Takashige Ichise is tied to this remake he may be able to capture that same feeling of horror found in his original for a Western audience.

A related westernization, well, Americanization was Stephen King’s remake of The Kingdom from Denmark into Kingdom Hospital. I’ve not seen King’s version, but the Danish one was pretty creepy.

Hopefully, this american version of a much better Asian film will not be diluted or left lacking as is the case of Dark Water or The Grudge.

Recently watched Infection and it is a good movie, let’s keep it that way!

Any word if The Eye will be coming to American film any time soon?
