Aquaman TV Series Gets New Handle

February 10, 2006 By Kyle Nin 8 Comments

The new CW Network series about superhero Aquaman will not have that name in it’s working title according to AquamanTV. The series will be known as “Mercy Reef.”

The last Aquaman-like character was Mark Harris originally played by Patrick Duffy (Dallas) on TV in the late 1970’s series “The Man From Atlantis.”

Aquaman, created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger for DC Comics in 1941, was a minor character in the DC Comics legion of heros, with Superman being the top dog. However, by the late 1950’s and early 1960’s his popularity began to grow significantly among comic book aficionados and his strips became highly sought out items by collectors.

By the early 1980’s Aquaman was a well established member of the Justice League of America, thanks in part to the resurgence of interest in the Patrick Duffy Atlantis vehicle. Aquaman’s popularity has held steady for the last 20 years, but with this new CW project it is hoped by the producers that he will catch on as successfully as that other well-known superhero from Smallville.

I think you meant to say “By the early 1980’s, Aquaman was a well-established member of the Justice League of America” where he had been since the mid 1960’s. He never joined the Legion of Super-Heroes, which was based in the 30th century, 1000 years from now.

Wil Wheaton should be playing Aquaman – tis natural evolution from Aqualad. :p

    Can anyone help me?

I’m trying to find a copy of the Aquaman TV series from the 1970’s/80’s. It was not animated and starred the guy out of Dallas. Unless I was hallucinating as as small child I’m sure this show existed!

    Emma,

The series was called “Man from Atlantis” and starred Patrick Duffy (of Dallas fame). It ran for one season back in 1977. While not directly about the comicbook Aquaman, it was a close clone.
