On February 2, 2005 a little known organization was formed that would change forever how fans of Star Trek and the scifi genre would communicate their ideas, talents, frustrations and joys about STAR TREK and a myriad of other scifi venues. That group would not stay unknown for long. From obscurity to controversy to a voice to be reckoned with Trek United has become an important voice for the voice-less fan of STAR TREK and scifi in general.
Trek United’s co-founder and main spokesperson is Tim Brazeal (recipient of the Honorary Achievement Medal by The United States Air Force). His dream was to get fans together for the sole purpose of saving a television program called STAR TREK: Enterprise from being cancelled after only a three-year run. Mostly through the efforts of the founding group (Save Enterprise.com) the show was returned for one more season. As it appreared that UPN and Paramount were determined to bring the show to a close after the fourth season, Brazeal and others started Trek United.
Through the efforts of this organization a sum of $3.14 million was raised in less than two months, with the hopes of showing the network bosses that there was still great interest in saving the program from cancellation. The effort failed, but out of the ashes and as a result of intense media coverage from CNN, MSNBC and others due to the staggering sum raised by fans, a phoenix rose from those same ashes.
Now the organization is very involved with the many facets of the scifi genre with interest also coming from others already well established in the entertainment industry. The organization is in the forefront for support of varied fan-based projects and conventions across the globe and Project X, a work in progress, will, according to those heading it up, be coming to light very soon and in the words of the Trek United staff it will be “historic.”
Trek United is also very involved with several charity organizations, such as the efforts to help the Katrina and Rita victims and “Trek4tots.”
Congratulations Trek United on your first birthday. We at Slice of SciFi wish you only success and many more to come.
