Roland Emmerich Makes Epic SciFi-Fantasy

January 31, 2006 By S. K. Sloan Leave a Comment

Director/producer Roland Emmerich is busy with six films in the offing for future release. That is just how hot this many faceted filmmaker from Germany is at the present time.

In 1990 he came onto the Hollywood radar with the semi-successful, low budget scifi film “Moon 44”. He followed that with big box office hit after hit including “Independence Day”, “Godzilla”, “The Thirteenth Floor”, “The Patriot”, and most recently, “The Day After Tomorrow”.

Of the six new films under his tutelage, three are of the scifi/fantasy venue with just a touch of real history thrown into the mix for validation.

10,000 B.C., which is just beginning its production phase is about a pre-historic mammoth hunter who must travel through new uncharted lands in order to keep his tribe alive. Shooting begins on 10,000 B.C. in April on South African locations and is scheduled for a Summer 2007 release.

His next epic KING TUT, follows the young Prince Tutankhamen as he manipulates Egyptian priestly heirarchy in an attempt to reclaim his crown and kingdom after the death of his father. The movie looks at the behind-the-scene religious and political jousting and intrique that led to the murder of this child ruler called King Tut.

Emmerich’s third film of interest to scifi fans, THE BREAK, comes from the pen of screenwriter David Twohy. Next to nothing is currently known about this film other than it is in pre-production and will be purely science fiction.
