Serenity (Firefly) Back On the Small Screen?

December 2, 2005 By S. K. Sloan 3 Comments

Just within the last few minutes my email box has gotten hit so hard from fans all over the world, including our own team, Sevens and Summer, that I wanted to get this right out to everyone.

There are reports that Joss Whedon is seriously considering bringing the Serenity crew (a.k.a. Firefly) back to television in one format or another. It could happen as a made-for-tv movie, a miniseries or even another weekly series. Details at this time are both iffy and sketchy.

IGN Film Force (the first to go public with this) contacted both Joss and Universal. Joss is denying the rumor and Universal execs are mum.

As rumors go, this one has spread across the globe very quickly (my email box is overflowing as I write this article), but only time will tell if all the excitement is warranted.

As for me, I would rather see another big screen viewing of Serenity featuring the whole back story of Book. But, let’s face it, I’ll take Serenity back any way I can get it, as long as Joss is still in control of the project.

    Operative word: RUMOR.
Seems to me that the whole “iffy and sketchy” thing is very much at play here.
Me? I’m not doing The Happy Dance until I hear it from OFFICIAL sources.

The only real OFFICAL Source for this rumor is either Joss or Universal.

Every newspaper, magazine, tv news, internet news, including ourselves here at SoSF are never “OFFICIAL SOURCES.”

It is only when those actually involved and in the know with any project come forward to one of us in the media that the news becomes official. Until that time it is always a rumor that may or may not be true at varying degrees of accuracy.

But, and especially when it comes to Hollywood and politics, my many years of doing this have proven to me that rumors tend to have a large element of truth imbedded into them. The trick is knowing how to ferret out that tidbit of truth and when and how to make it public knowledge.

Joss has said that the hopes of redoing a tv series were slim to none many times. At Comic Con this year he seemed to hint that if Serenity lived on, it would be through movie sequals. However, if the money and opprotunity came forth for him to return to television, I know he would jump at the chance. Time will tell.
