“Serenity” broke $30 million in box office sales worldwide. While far from steller results, this normally is enough to keep studio execs interested enough to consider approving a sequel. And, on a bright note, it will probably do much better than that in DVD sales.
Of course, the big question will be; is Joss Whedon happy enough with those kinds of numbers? Sequels generally tend to do less business than the original so Whedon has to be wondering if all the headache, heartbreak and loss of family time involved with making a major motion picture like this one is worth running the risks. Besides, it may be tough to top himself, “Serenity wise,” because this first venture was so damned good.
He may be looking at George Lucas’ play-book and deciding it may be best to leave it alone, and move on to other challenges.
I hope not! I think there is still a lot more to flesh-out of Serenity and its colorful characters and myriad of possibilities, to keep old and new fans going to the theaters and buying up those DVD’s.
Stay the course Joss, we won’t abandon you.

I have heard from various on-line sources that the magic number (including DVD sales and rentals and worldwide box office) is $80 million.
So, the word is…buy two or three copies the day it comes out and give them to friends, family, enemies, alien invaders…whatever it takes.

I’m going to go with a No on this one. Not because I wouldn’t enjoy another movie, I would, but because for all the effort to get the movie made, to get the signal out, to convince someone with money that it’d be worth it, the numbers just aren’t there. I think everyone was hoping for this sleeper hit, and that just didn’t manifest. The DVDs will make it profitable, but I really doubt anyone will bet money on a sequel.

Another Serenity/Firefly movie (or two) would be great. But even if that doesn’t work out, it’d be great to have a line of Serenity books.

In addition to Joss Whedon’s being able to “resurrect” Firefly, Serenity was his “audition” for the bigwigs at Universal (and any of the other studioss).
He delivered a movie that got great reviews, delivered more fans to Firefly, came in on time and at budget (which was very very small).
He posted that he was “content” and is now getting to work on the Wonder Woman movie.
Then after that Goners.
Then after *that*…I personally think it would be nice to see a second Serenity flick.
