Pacific Rim fell short of expectations over the weekend, taking in only $38.3 million and third place on its opening weekend.

The movie fell short against Adam Sandler’s Grown-Ups 2 which took in $42.5 million and was second and holdover Despicable Me 2 which topped the box office with  $44.8 million.

Melissa McCarthy’s The Heat was fourth over the weekend with $14 million. The Lone Ranger rounded out the top five with $11.4 million.
