If you’ve got June 29 of next year circled on your calendar as the opening day for the sequel to Star Trek, we hope you wrote that in in pencil.
Deadline reports that due to some issues production and release of the film could be delayed six months.
Among the issues is the fact that while writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have a 70 page outline for the sequel, they don’t have a final script written yet. Part of that is due to a holding pattern Paramount is in to get J.J. Abrams back into the directing chair for the film. Abrams hasn’t officially signed on yet and it’s reported the writers are waiting for his input before finalizing the script.
Add to it that actor Chris Pine has signed on to a reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise. That production could be fast tracked and end up coming before Pine could resume his role as Captain James T. Kirk in the sequel.
So maybe a six month delay may not be a bad thing. Trek fans may recall that many of the classic Trek and Next Gen films were released in the holiday season. And let’s not forget what happened to Star Trek: The Motion Picture when Paramount rushed the film to meet a release date.
If it’s going to be delayed, let them delay it to get it right.

If it’s going to be delayed, they may as well cancel the whole thing as far as I’m concerned.

@Steve. That’s certainly cutting off your nose to spite your face there
Recall that the reboot was delayed to make sure they got it right.

Moving it to November or December would be a good thing. As Michael said, Trek films have always done best during holiday season openings. Besides, Pine will make an excellent Jack Ryan and I’m curious to see him in that first.

At this point, I would be happy just to see a trailer for the movie so I don’t mind waiting.
Ben Ragunton says
I have no problem with the movie being delayed if that means getting it right. My only concern is that the longer the delay the harder it is to get your cast committed to doing the sequel.
