CW Renews “Supernatural,” “Vampire Diaries”

February 17, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Look like the CW’s Thursday night line-up will be intact for another season.  The network gave the green light to new seasons for “The Vampire Diaries” and “Supernatural” yesterday.

Since it debuted last fall, “The Vampire Diaries” has held its own in a tough Thursday time slot and “Supernatural” has seen growth over the past two years in its time slot.

And now for the biggest concern for “Supernatural” fans. The Chicago Tribune’s Maureen Ryan indicates that producer and creator Eric Kripke will be back to helm the sixth season.  Kripke had said last year he thought the fifth season could be the last for the Winchester Brothers, but has since said he thinks there are still enough stories to tell in a sixth year.

The renewals are seen as early by the network.  One show that didn’t get an early renewal is “Smallville” though the network has said that a tenth season isn’t beyond the realm of possibility.

I’m excited to have another season of Supernatural. It is on my top five list of “best shows on television today”. I was a little dishearten when I learn that Kripke was stepping down as showrunner for season 6, but I have faith in Sera Gamble. She has either been story editor or writer from some of the my favorite episodes including “The Song Remains the Same” (arguable the best episode of Season 5 so far.) Plus she has been with the show since the beginning, so I don’t foresee any radical changes with her. It is definitely going to be interesting.

Thats great news about Supernatural. Unfortunately now that *I* am firmly on board and have nearly caught up on watching the previous seasons of this awesome show, I’m sure they’ll have a sudden reversal of that decision and cancel it immediately.

Apologies up front to everyone for that. When it happens, just remember its my fault.
