“Dollhouse” Canceled
First the bad news.
Fox has decided not to renew Joss Whedon’s sophomore series “Dollhouse” for a third season.
Now the slightly better news.
According to reports, the series will be allowed to finish out its sophomore season order of 13 episodes with the final episode serving as a series finale. Whedon and the production team are currently working on the eleventh episode of the season so production could wrap by Thanksgiving.
“This gives Joss the opportunity to end in a significant way,” the network said in a statement.
Fox reportedly will still air all the remaining episodes in two hour blocks in December.
Whedon issued the following statement at Whedonesque about the decision by Fox.
“I don’t have a lot to say. I’m extremely proud of the people I’ve worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you’ll agree in the coming months. I’m grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again. I’m off to pursue Internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now, there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear. Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again,” he writes.
That’s too bad.
However, I’m not surprised. Fox has a bad reputation with genre shows, except for The X Files.
Joss was lucky to have gotten renewed last year.
And Yet Heroes still lives on for 4 seasons……..
Another show that required it’s viewers to have a friggin’ brain cancelled. Crap. The last episode they showed was incredible. Just when I kept thinking the show couldn’t get anyore intense they showed “Belonging”. It blew me away.
I am seriously at the point where I am ready to tell the networks they can go screw themsleves. The Jay Leno show is getting shitty ratings 5 nights a week but NBC won’t cancel it because it costs NOTHING to make. I spend two seasons watching Dollhouse get better and better and it gets cancelled. Meanwhile Heroes gets worse and worse and it’s STILL ON!
Why should I bother watching network TV anymore?
I can understand your frustration Andrew.
I will say that it’s been reported that Heroes will be wrapping up at the end of the season…for good. We talked about it on this week’s Slice of SciFi.
As for Dollhouse, I’m glad we got what we did. And while I understand the frustration with the networks, if we stop watching, we lose a lot of other great shows. At least we got a chance to try it and see if we liked it….
I have to admit, I’m a huge Joss Whedon fan, but Dollhouse didn’t thrill me (mostly because echo bugs me). I’ll admit its starting to get much better, but its definitely not one of the shows I just can’t wait to sit down and watch. There are other cancelled shows that I’ve felt much more bitter about…
If there’s a bright light here, at least we will get to see some sort of an ending, rather than have the series end on a cliffhanger.
I think Joss Whedon should just start up his own frackin network, so he can run his shows until HE decides to end them.
Here’s the problem with season 2 so far:
Episode #1: Echo marries a wealthy arms dealer and has a meltdown, remembering pieces of her previous imprints.
Episode #2: Echo is imprinted with a mother’s personality so that she can bond with a baby, but has a meltdown when the husband pulls the plug on the operation.
Episode #3: Echo is imprinted with the personality of a free-spirited (if slightly dim) college student, but has a meltdown when her imprint is accidentally switched with that of a serial killer.
Episode #4 is still sitting on my DVR, but I’m detecting a pattern. That episode is apparently about Sierra, so maybe they’ll mix it up and she’ll be the one who has a meltdown.
Fox….enough said
D.C. - do yourself a favour and watch the Sierra episode - it’s great!
I don’t like Echo, she’s annoying, and the show works best as an ensemble. Just check out the Sierra episode, because it has already been labeled as one of the best Dollhouse episodes to date. It’s all about Sierra, Boyd, Victor and Topher.
Wheddon just needs to face the facts that he and Fox are in an abusive relationship. He needs to make a clean break and look for love elsewhere.
It doesn’t surprise me at all, They put Dollhouse up against SyFy Friday. It would have done better earlier in the week.

Dollhouse is amazing! Stupid Fox never gives Joss a chance–just like what happened to Firefly! At least they’re playing out the season…hopefully they end it well.
No big loss to me. It was repetitive and going nowhere as far as I can tell. I will not miss it. As to Heroes, never watched it.
I know FireFly. Dollhouse, sir, is no FireFly.
