Blomkamp Gets Green Light For New Project

Blomkamp Gets Green Light For New Project

October 23, 2009 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

Neill Blomkamp, the creator and director of this summer’s hit “District 9,” has been given the green light for his next project according to Variety.

Media Rights Capital has committed to the next film by “District 9” writer-director Neill Blomkamp. The untitled sci-fier will begin production by the middle of next year. …

MRC is giving Blomkamp creative freedom and a production commitment that isn’t contingent on domestic distribution. …

“MRC is letting me make the film I want to make, and that is by far the most important thing here,” Blomkamp told Daily Variety. “The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, (one) that comes directly from me.”

“It’s a pretty epic science fiction film that takes place not on Earth,” Blomkamp said. “So that probably sounds like pretty much every other science fiction film out there. But it has a pretty unique, awesome twist to it, which I’ll have to make it before I can tell you. … It’s based on a planet, yeah. It’s based on another planet. It’s actually based on two other planets.”

No word yet on if the movie will be a follow-up to “District 9.” Blomkamp is currently working on a script for the project.
