Shanks to Guest Star on “Smallville”

Shanks to Guest Star on “Smallville”

October 20, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 5 Comments

Actor Michael Shanks, best known for his role as Dr. Daniel Jackson in the “Stargate” franchise, will guest-star on an upcoming epiosde of “Smallville.”

The episode will air in January, according to early indications.

And who will Shanks play, you ask.  Well, that might be considered SPOILER material, so if you don’t want to know, please stop reading now.

Shanks is one of two guest actors who will join the show as members of the fledgling Justice League, according to reports.  The two characters will be Hawkman and Doctor Fate, according to SciFi Wire.

Actor Brent Stait has signed on to play Doctor Fate.

This probably means that Shanks will play Hawkman on the CW’s series.  This hasn’t been confirmed yet, however.

I think IGN confirmed that Shanks would be playing Hawkman. They also said that actress Britt Irvin will be playing Stargirl in the same episode.

Actually, it was confirmed by Shanks’s official site. The question now is: Will they be going with the traditional pants-and-leather-straps costume from the comics? ‘Cause I’ll tune in to see that. (Oh, who am I kidding? I’ll watch it no matter what he’s wearing.) While I’m glad to see him working and getting to stay close to home, I’m a little sad that he’s doing so on a show that’s been hanging on by it fingernails for years now.

Hanging on by its fingernails? Maybe seasons six and seven, but last season and this season have shown an incredible turnaround for the series. The eighth season alone had some of the best episodes of the entire series, and so far it seems to be continuing that way this season as well.

And out of all the shows I’m watching this fall season, “Smallville” actually seems to be the best … which is strange, because usually it’s not.

I’m glad that you’re enjoying it so much. Clearly others are too, or there wouldn’t be rumors of a tenth season. While it’s had some okay moments, I really haven’t enjoyed the show that much since the Brainiac storyline ended and Lex left. I’m still watching because I’m a completionist and keep hoping that it’ll grab me again (especially with Callum Blue playing Zod), but so far it hasn’t. Mostly it just makes me want to reach through the screen and smack various main characters for their inane behavior. I find that I have to be in a specific mood to even consider watching these days, so there are three episodes waiting on my DVR at them moment. For now, it’s firmly in my ‘meh’ pile.

That’s strange, because I have the opposite reaction. I don’t have a problem with any of the characters (well, maybe Chloe – her jealousy is running a little too far for me). I really WANT to watch each new episode, which is more than I could say for other shows I watch.

The show that’s firmly in MY ‘meh’ pile is “Stargate Universe”.

    I want “Stargate Atlantis” back!!!

“Fringe” is a really good show too, but this season has disappointed me so far. It’s not as good as what I hoped. But it’s only been on for a few episodes, hopefully things will get better soon. It’s the same for “Supernatural”. Although “Heroes” and “Dollhouse” are turning out to be a little better than I expected.

But when it comes to “Smallville”, it seems that I’m never disappointed. This is what the show should have been all along. Too bad it took them nearly a decade to get here.
