Gamers Playing More, Buying More Used Games

Gamers Playing More, Buying More Used Games

July 7, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

In the current economic recession, gamers are escaping the realities of everyday life a bit more and doing it a bit more economically a new Nielsen report indicates.

“The Value Gamer” is report based on a survey of the first five months of the year.  According to the survey, gamers are spending an additional one to two hours a week playing videogames.

They’re also purchasing the games used or taking advantage of rental services for the games the report indicates.

According to Nielsen, the ratio of used games to the total number purchased is at an all-time high, as consumers cut back on new title purchases.  Use of rental services by mail have also reached Nielsen peaks.

The research cites this rise in used games and rentals as well as a lack of blockbuster titles for a drop in new game purchases for 2009.

The survey included 2,400 participants classified by Nielsen as gamers, or consumers who have purchased a game in the last six months and played for at least one hour a week on current consoles or PC

Well, let’s see, games aren’t cheap – especially those $50 now and $15 per month ones – So, yeah, I can see used games being the way to go.

Used games are definitely a good option for those that don’t have a lot of money, but also don’t forget about XboX’s Platinum collection, and similar versions for other gaming platforms. which means you can still get a “new” game for cheap. I picked up a new copy of Dead Rising for under 30USD, and had a blast with it. If it weren’t for used games and platinum collection types of deals, I definitely wouldn’t be gaming as much.

To be quite frank, games are worth a ridiculous amount of money now a’ days and it sucks. So what do gamers do? Buy off the 14 and 15 dollar games lol
