“Star Trek” — A Variety Review

April 22, 2009 by Michael Hickerson   || Category: Film Reviews

Blasting onto the screen at warp speed and remaining there for two hours, the new and improved “Star Trek” will transport fans to sci-fi nirvana. Faithful enough to the spirit and key particulars of Gene Roddenberry’s original conception to keep its torchbearers happy but, more crucially, exciting on its own terms in a way that makes familiarity with the franchise irrelevant, J.J. Abrams’ smart and breathless space adventure feels like a summer blockbuster that just couldn’t stay in the box another month. Paramount won’t need any economic stimulus package with all the money it’ll rake in with this one globally, and a follow-up won’t arrive soon enough.

NOW That’s what I am talking about, I haven’t looked forward to a trek film this much since Undiscovered Country and i plan to go the first weekend if I can.

The new “Trek” is just what we need, a thrilling, feel good, optimistic story. I am so tired of dark, dystopian fllms. “Star Trek” will be the antidote. Can’t wait to see it.

    Long time trekker—

    Special effects: 10 of 10
    Characters: 9 of 10
    Story: 1 of 10
    Sci-fi? 1 of 10

Don’t let all the flash and pretty pictures fool you. This film was missing the introspection, philosophy and moral view points that made Trek what it is.
It will destroy Trek as we know it, because the masses will love it. It’s missing the geek factor - which is probably by design, but terribly unfortunate. I cannot agree with critics, this film is not a reboot. It’s a death knell to the vision, and a whoring of characters, and the Star Trek world. Eye candy, not brain candy.

I am 60 years old. Have been a Trek fan since Gene began it and can say with all candor that this new film by JJ Abrams is…..wait for it……..TFA! Totally Frakin’ Awesome!

    Special Effects 10 of 10
    Characters 10 of 10
Story: Superbly delivered alternate timeline in a way that wouldn’t make Einstein cringe…10 of 10
    and Sci-fi — 10 of 10

Star Trek has been revived and will live long and prosper for at least another 40 years thanks to Abrams, Orci, Kurtzman and Nimoy. Way to go Paramount. You succeeded where only two others have gone (Bond and Doctor Who) — resurrected a franchise that was growing old and stale making it (to quote Dr. Carol Marcus) — “young as when the world was new”.

A must see film for all Trekkies, Trekkers, sci-fi geeks and anyone who likes good, entertaining filmmaking.

I agree, Sam. This is actually not a resurrection of the old Star Trek, but a rebirth of a new franchise. No spoilers. Go see it. - you’ll have a great time.

I may not have been a fan as long as Sam, but as a 30+ year fan, the movie is fine. Did my Star Trek geekdom point out some continuity issues, even in the small amount of remaining continuity, yes. Does it matter, no.
I really enjoyed seeing what happened when Abrams shook the etch a sketch that is Star Trek.

I really liked Nimoy in the movie as well. It was a lot nicer legacy touch, then McCoy in the first episode of TNG.

I agree with Sam, though I can’t say plot was 10/10. It was enough plot to get you through. The real story was the characters, who were superb.

For people who think canon was crapped on, there is no canon. This is like having a new cast, new series sort of deal. It’s not supposed to be all interconnected, in my mind.
