Donner: “Magneto” Depends on “Wolverine”

Donner: “Magneto” Depends on “Wolverine”

April 22, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

Executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner said the fate of the potential “Magneto” prequel lies squarely with the success of “Wolverine.”

“We have a great script. Honestly, we have all been just so focused on getting ‘Wolverine’ out that we didn’t take the time to sit down and explore “What are the movies we’re going to do next within the genre?” We will do that. We will do that. We all want to,” she told SciFi Wire. “‘Magneto’ is a fantastic script, and hopefully we’ll make it. I don’t know.”

Donner also said that “X-Men” fans can look forward to the green-lit “First Class.”

“And then we have ‘First Class’, which is based on the X-Men comics’ first class and is very literal to the title. It’s the first class in Xavier’s school,” she said. “But that’s just being written. I haven’t even seen a first draft. And I’m producing that with Simon Kinberg.”

“Wolverine” will open in theaters on Friday, May 1. We’ll have details and updates on the leak of “Wolverine” on-line in this week’s Slice of SciFi.

I have twice as much interest to see a Magneto movie over Wolverine. The Wolverine gross figures will be a hotly debated topic. Was it helped or hurt by a premature release of the workprint? I’m not sure we’ll ever know. On one hand, seeing most of the movie so early before release has dulled expectations. On the otherhand, it’s not the turd that most comic book movies sequels are… Between the leak and the economy, I’m not sure any comparison between Wolverine and the X-Men franchise is valid.

I understand why they’re hedging their bets, seeing if there’s enough X-Men love to justify a movie that focuses on an X-Men “villian”… but that doesn’t mean I have to like that particularly timid approach.

Don’t say that you won’t make it at all… say that you’d delay it for economic reasons, but please don’t not ever make it if Wolverine doesn’t make $2 billion.

Yes, I’m in that “give us a Magento movie” line, too.
