George Lucas’ live-action “Star Wars” series could see a face familiar to fans of “a galaxy far, far away.” According to media outlets in New Zealand, actor Jay Laga’aia is in the running for a lead role in the series. Laga’aia worked Captain Gregar Typho, the head of security of Amidala in episodes I and III of the prequel trilogy.
Whether or not Laga’aia would reprise the role or take on a new one isn’t known at this time.
The series will reportedly follow the Rebel Alliance as it slowly gains strength against the the evil Empire. The newspaper also reported that the show is a basic cable TV series and that it will feature stormtroopers, but not Jedi knights or Darth Vader. Lucas is currently casting for the series.
The fact that Laga’aia may be cast suggests that Lucas is considering shooting the show somewhere in Australia or New Zealand.
The actor is currently featured on “The Legend of the Seeker.”
If we get to see the rise of the Rebel Alliance, does that mean we’ll get to see the rise of Rogue Squadron as well? (crosses fingers, arms, legs, eyes…)

george of the jungle has been flogging a dead horse for years with the re releases and the prequels and the merchandise and the…… i could go on forever, but to not include the thing that his creation is based on beggars belief!!! starwars without jedi is like setting a series in the daily planet and then deciding not to employ clark kent,
one has to wonder has the credit crunch bit even george???
I think that just because it doesn’t involve Jedi doesn’t mean that Force sensitives won’t be involved. The Jedi are wanted criminals. So running around saying that you are a Jedi is a great way to be killed on site. Still, folks with Force ability will exist. I’m thinking that perhaps one of the characters has a deep dark secret. Cliche, I know, but we are talking George Lucas.
That being said, given George’s recent track record with the Star Wars franchise, I think this show will most likely crash and burn. Of course if he has someone else do the writing, directing, etc. then there might be a chance.
@tensaibaka: If you’re referring to the Rogue Squadron from the Michael A. Stackpole novel series (et al.), then probably not. According to Wookiepedia that unit wasn’t formed until after Episode IV.
Having seen Lucas’s efforts in the Star Wars and Indy franchises over the past decade, I’m not all that eager to see this new series. I think I’d rather watch Fanboys over and over instead. 🙂
@Robin: I didn’t know it wasn’t until later. I’d always thought they were around since the formation of the Rebellion. That doesn’t mean we can’t see how Wedge came to be in the Rebellion though. 🙂
At the moment video games like the force unleashed and lethal alliance are exploring the alliances origin making the consept very popular.
