Carlyle: “Stargate: Universe” Will Be Darker

March 18, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

It must be something with third series of a franchise delving into darker territory.  It happened with “Star Trek” with “Deep Space Nine” and now it appears the third “Stargate” installment will delve into darker territory as well.

Actor Robert Carlyle, who will play Dr. Nicholas Rush, told io9 that the new “Stargate: Universe” will delve into the darker side of the “Stargate” universe.

“In the first three hours there are three deaths. It’s very heavy,” he said. “There’s a suicide by episode six, as well. Because these people are in the far reaches of the universe, never to come home. That’s the thing Rush explains, that it’s impossible to go back. And they don’t know where else to turn.”

“Rush takes these people through the Stargate onto what they think is another world, and in fact it’s actually a ship. It’s a massive ship called called Destiny,” he added.  “It was a ship that was launched hundreds of thousands of years ago by the Ancients themselves, and is now floating through space. No one was ever meant to be there. The team that is there is ill-equipped to be there. So the first six or seven episodes are actually all called “Air,” “Fire,” “Water” and “Earth” because it’s about surviving amongst that, it’s more drama-based and more character-driven.”

Carylyle is the oldest member of a very distinguished cast for the upcoming “Stargate” series and says he is enjoying working with all of his fellow actors.  He said that fans have something special to look forward to when the third “Stargate” series debuts later this year.

Okay, there you go. I am not a huge Stargate fan anymore, but this article might have done the trick. They seem to want to take a note from Battlestar. What will we do without a dark depressing space opera? Well, we’ll replace it with another one.

    And I’m okay with that.

Dark doesn’t make it good though. It could just make it heavy handed and overly dramatic. We’ll see what happens.

I used to love Stargate up until Tel’c got hair and O’Neil left the show.
