Showtime has signed on to develop a new character driven science-fiction drama called “Syns” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Orginally called “Doll Hosptial,” the series was created by Stephen Volk, who pitched the concept to the BBC. The BBC passed on the series, but Showtime showed interest in the concept.
The American version credits Volk for the concept which will be developed by “Jericho”‘s John McNamara and “Supernatural”‘s Sera Gamble. McNamara will serve as executive producer and Gamble will work as a producer and story editor.
“Syns”s will a world in which human-like synthetic organisms, known as Syns, are used for various purposes, and bought and sold as luxury item and is being called a “light sci-fi series” grounded in the real world.
No word yet on potential stars for this series or when production on a pilot would begin.

Sounds like a cross between The Island and Dollhouse.
Why does everyone think it sounds like “Dollhouse”? Isn’t “Dollhouse” about people who have false memories, among other things? What does that have to do with human-like artificial lifeforms? They both seem totally different, like comparing “Star Trek” to something like “Bionic Woman”.

Well, “Lost” is considered a “light sci-fi series”. I guess it just depends on how they do it.
Good point. I think I misinterpreted and thought “light hearted”. They could go to some interesting ethical areas with this.
