Director Peter Segal, who helmed this summer’s “Get Smart,” got the nod from Warner Brothers to direct the upcoming “Captain Marvel” movie according to Variety.
Segal has a background in directing comedies, including the Adam Sandler vehicle, “The Longest Yard.”
Warner Brothers acquired the rights to make a big-screen version of “Marvel” from New Line where Segal and his Callahan Films partner, Michael Ewing were working on developing “Marvel.”
“Captain Marvel” could be the first in a franchise of superhero films for Warner Brothers.
The movie tells the story of teenage Billy Batson, who transforms into the superhero when he says the word “Shazam!”
Lejon from Chandler says
Now, we just need to include a mentor conveniently named “Mentor” some CGI Elders, and a big brawny guy to play Cap’n Marv with very little to say.
Yeah, They’re going to slaughter my childhood again, but with this one, I hope it’s the type of slaughter that feeds me a nice hunk of beef.

Captain Marvel is much more than just a Saturday morning TV show (which I loved BTW), his legacy is long and temultuous.
He was sued out of existence by Superman (DC/NPP), then 20 years later was acquired and re-introduced by the same.. during that time Marvel Comics had created their own Captain Marvel(s) and still hold (most of) the rights to the name, which is why you see the name Shazam more than Captain Marvel when referencing the Big Red Cheese.
I really want to see this movie work, but at this point I don’t have much hope.
Melvin from Calgary says
I hope they take a lot from the Power of Shazam series helmed by Ordway in the 90s. That was one of my favorite interpretations of the characters.
D. C. says
The problem is, DC/Warner while DC/Warner owns the rights to the character, they don’t own the rights to the name “Captain Marvel”. Marvel Comics does which is why DC has never put out a comic called “Captain Marvel”.
So, the movie will be called “Shazam” or something similar, just like the old TV series was.
