Two of DC’s most popular superheroes will make the jump into digital stop-motion animation reports the Hollywood Reporter.
Warner Brothers Premiere and Warner Digital Animation will produce downloadable verions of “Superman: Red Son” and “Batman: Black and White.” The two stories will be adapted from popular mini-series, later collected in graphic-novel format,  featuring the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight.
The technique of stop-motion animation was introduced earlier this year at ComicCon with fans getting a look at the first installment of the popular “Watchmen” graphic novel. The second installment for “Watchmen” went on-line earlier this week and fans will be pleased to know that the entire graphic novel will be released in digital comic format. The installments are planned to be released every two weeks until the final issue.
The motion comics are available via iTunes, Amazon VOD, Xbox Live and the Sony PlayStation Store, The companies compiled “summary editions” for Verizon Wireless V Cast customers as well as Sprint TV customers via the DC Comics Channel.
“Superman: Red Son” will be based on a 2003 mini-series by Mark Millar and artist Dave Johnson. The storyline looked at the “what if” question of Superman being raised in the former Soviet Union as opposed to the United States.
“Batman: Black and White” is based on a four-issue Batman miniseries published in the early 90’s  featuring eight-page Batman stories by such writers and artists as Neil Gaiman, Joe Kubert, Brian Bolland and Bill Sienkiewicz.
There is no word yet on if or how the original artists on these projects may be involved in their transition to digital comics.
