Indy 4 on DVD/Blu-ray

Indy 4 on DVD/Blu-ray

August 12, 2008 By Sam Sloan 1 Comment

“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” will come to DVD and Blu-ray disc on October 14, according Paramount Pictures announced Tuesday.

“Crystal Skull” starred Harrison Ford as the aging adventurer/archaeologist Indiana Jones, the role he made famous in 1981 with the first of now four Indy films. This latest was done after a 19-year hiatus from the character and was again directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by creator George Lucas. The film also reunited Ford with his first female star Karen Allen (Marion Ravenwood). It also featured Shia LaBeouf as the son of Indy and Marion, Cate Blanchette, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent and Ray Winstone.

“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” will be available on a single-disc DVD with only the film or in two-disc DVD and Blu-ray sets. Extras provided in the two-disc sets will include a segment on how the new movie evolved after nearly a 20-year absence, a production diary with highlights from the various location shoots in New Mexico, Connecticut and Hawaii, segments on makeup, visual effects and the a look at the famed real crystal skulls located in different regions of the globe. A DVD boxed set with all four movies also will also be available, however, neither Paramount Pictures or Lucasfilm have announced when the first three Indy films will be released on Blu-ray.

Since “Crystal Skull” was a box office success ($770 million internationally), Lucas, Spielberg and Ford are already talking a fifth film for the franchise, with Ford donning the hat and cracking the whip for yet another adventure.

The difference in picture quality between Blu-ray and standard-definition DVD was very obvious. But the difference is accentuated when you get the chance to flip back and forth between the two. Just as many owners of rear-projection DLP sets don’t notice that their picture is getting dimmer over time, many owners of standard-definition DVD players will be perfectly happy with the picture quality, and won’t notice what they’re missing, unless they have something better, such as Blu-ray, with which to compare it.
