Johnny 5 Returns

April 4, 2008 by Sam Sloan   || Category: News

johnny5.jpgFor those who remember the 1986 film “Short Circuit” and enjoyed it will be happy to know that the frisky robot listed in the military’s database as simpy “Number 5″ is coming back to the big screen. He was dubbed Johnny 5 by his human buds Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens.

Johnny 5 was a specialized interactive robot designed by the military as a highly sophisticated weapon. However, it evolved and developed its own conscience awareness and unique personality after being hit by lightning. Once Johnny’s sense of right and wrong kicked in it was no longer deemed reliable as a weapon and scheduled for destruction. With the help of human friends, Johnny 5 set out to escape those who wanted his demise.

S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, the original creators of all the characters in the first film and the scribes behind the screenplay have been called upon to write this new entry from Dimension Films.

Netflix, Inc.

Folks, the end is near… Apparently it doesn’t matter if the well is dry, they’ll drink the sand…

Really? REALLY? I loved the first movie (it didn’t hurt that I had a major thing for Ally Sheedy at the time) but the second one sucked. How do you revive this after 22 years?

This seems like another case of Hollywood being unable to do anything fresh.

    I’m speechless - no, really.

I had planned to say something snarky but I really can’t muster anything past astonishment and disappointment that they’re going to bring this tripe back.

Johnny 5 was one of the most fantastic things to come into my life as a kid. Sensational well thought out puppetry at it’s best.

The robotic ideas in that film inspired me in many ways. (undertook and completed a degree in Mechatronics Engineer for one, Johnny 5 kept me going throughout that).

To all the boo hooer’s all I can say is if you don’t like it, there’s no need to say anything, go watch Days of our lives or whatever it is that does it for you.

Can’t wait to see what new enhancments are given to this fantastic and legendary robot. I only hope it’s actually built, just like the original mechanical puppet and no CGI, that’s something that makes these great films so watchable today. I’ve got both films and love them both.

Can’t get enough of Number 5, go for it.

    All the best,
    Sean A. Curtin
