Indeed, Tim. I’m glad I waited it out and resisted buying HD-DVD.

We did have a call that didn’t make it on the air saying that I was incorrect about both formats supporting the same codecs. I did a little research and made sure I wasn’t spreading misinformation.

According to the technical specifications, they both support SMPTE VC-1 and H.264AVC.

While Blu-Ray has slightly higher bandwidth and higher capacity, the whole fight really came down to which format had the most DRM and would therefore be the most inconvenient to customers.

And which one would cause consumers to buy multiple copies if they want to be able to watch the movie anywhere.

But I wouldn’t be encouraging anyone to buy a player until SONY gets done deciding the hardware profile. Some players are destined to be nothing more than a really expensive upconvert when they actually have it ready for primetime.

Maybe the e should be put back in – the format seems to be one big vowel movement!

think of increased “security measures” as a more exciting challenge for some.

in the end, it’ll all mean nothing.
