Star Trek Movie Trailer Described

January 16, 2008 By Sam Sloan 11 Comments

If you plan on going to see “Cloverfield” this weekend then you will be treated to the first glimpse of JJ Abrams’ upcoming Paramount/Bad Robot film “Star Trek.” The folks over at the HollywoodChicago.com forums claim this is what you can expect to see.

Whether or not this is completely accurate will be revealed in just a few days. “Cloverfield” premieres this Friday, January 18, 2008.

star_trek_xi.jpgFirst up is a view of the Paramount logo followed by the Bad Robot logo (production company owned by J.J. Abrams, the film’s producer & director). Then the screen goes black. Suddenly some sparks (very saturated, Michael Bay looking cinematography). We hear an old NASA radio countdown: “30 sec and counting.” Close up of a timeless guy with goggles leaning down doing some welding and sparks flying around. He lifts his goggles and slightly futuristic head covering, but he’s not wearing a space suit. The worker leans down to some more welds. Camera pans back and the audience can see he’s standing on a metal frame that looks somewhat familiar. Then popping up on the screen in big blue letters and nicely framed lens flare is “FROM DIRECTOR J.J. ABRAMS….”

An audio of President Kennedy’s speech about space flight: “The eyes of the world now look to space.” People walking around the saucer section. The welders are everywhere to give some scale to the size of the the craft. Then you hear, “The Eagle has landed.”

A huge overhead shot pans across, suddenly showing what looks like miles of scaffolding underneath and the title: “THE FUTURE BEGINS.” This is followed with an impressive shot by the nacelles and people all over the ship. Also visible is a large industrialize shipyard-styled scape in the background. The ship is being built on Earth, not in space. Neil Armstrong’s famous Moon landing line “One small step for man…” and then the camera slowly pans up over the whole saucer section.

All this is followed by Leonard Nimoy’s distinguished voice saying, “Space, the final frontier,” and the familiar “Star Trek” music theme. The shot continues, revealing the writing on the top of the saucer — “U.S.S. Enterprise,” and these huge aircraft-like warp engines in the background. Technically, the first reveal of what we’re seeing. Just the Starfleet log (no title).

The trailer ends with the Title Card: “UNDER CONSTRUCTION CHRISTMAS 2008”

Wow! That’s a great description. I shivered a little imagining it.

For me, it was the feeling of legacy. The combination of historic spaceflight references with the slow reveal of the beloved Enterprise, itself a legacy.

I’m so glad I didn’t read this before going to see Cloverfield. It was so much better to not know what it was until hearing “Space, the final frontier . . .” and then proceeding to totally geek out.

This movie is going to either jump-start the Star Trek franchise the way Casino Royale did with the James Bond series, or kill it off entirely. I get the feeling there will be no middle ground.

The jury is still out of course, but the trailer suggests that Abrams intends to give Trek not just a Bond- or Batman-style reboot, but a new attitude to go with it. Considering how bland the most recent Trek films and TV series have been, this is a very good sign.
