A New “Doctor Who” DVD and a Season Four Rumor

August 13, 2007 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

Written by: Michael Hickerson (SoSF Staff Journalist)

The much-maligned (and rightfully so) 17th season of “Doctor Who” will see a second story released to DVD in the near future.

The British Board of Film Classification has listed details on its web-site for the release of “Destiny of the Daleks” on DVD. The story that kicked off season 17 stars Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor and features the debut of Lalla Ward as the second Romana. (Ward guest-starred in the previous story, “The Armageddon Factor”).

“Destiny of the Daleks” is a sequel to one of the most popular “Doctor Who” stories from the classic run, “Genesis of the Daleks” and features the return of the Daleks’ creator Davros. It is also the final story by the Daleks’ creator Terry Nation for the show.

No details yet on extras for this release or when the story will see DVD-release. There are reports that the BBC would like to release a Davros-themed box-set. This would package “Destiny” with the previously released “Genesis of the Daleks” (one of the top-selling classic stories of all-time on DVD), “Resurrection of the Daleks,” “Revelation of the Daleks” and “Remembrance of the Daleks.” No word on if “Destiny of the Daleks” will be available separately or only as part of this box-set, but it doesn’t make much sense for punish fans who have previously collected these stories by making them buy them again.

As soon as more details are confirmed by the BBC or the “Doctor Who” Restoration Team, we’ll let you know.

While I am loathe to repeat this, British tabloid “The Sun” is at it again, reporting potential casting rumors for the upcoming fourth series of “Doctor Who.”

The tabloid reports that Ben Kingsley is in talks for a guest-role in the upcoming fourth series of the hit-BBC show.

No one at the BBC or from the “Doctor Who” production team have confirmed this information and we advise our fans take this as an interesting rumor for now. As soon as we get confirmation either way, we’ll report it here.

As for who Kingsley would play on the show, what “The Sun” is reporting is a huge potential SPOILER for series four. Don’t read any more if you don’t want to know…

According to “The Sun” Kingsley would take on the role of Davros, the creator of the Daleks.

I would advise readers to take this with a grain of salt. Davros has been rumored to return to the series each year since series one.

But to play devil’s advocate, the BBC has a pattern of releasing classic stories featuring the villains for the upcoming or current series onto DVD. So, taking this news with the release of “Destiny of the Daleks” and the rumored Davros box-set, this could be an accurate report.

Man…a tad bit bias and harsh if you ask me. I for one am looking forward to seeing another Tom Baker episode on DVD. Plus, Season 17, although the low point of the Tom Baker years, was the high point of ratings for the show and kicks the butt out of a lot of the later seasons (excluding the new series).
