Kevin Spacey will return as Lex Luthor in “Superman: Man of Steel,” according to Variety.
The entertainment paper went on to state that “Superman” director Bryan Singer met with Spacey while in New York to pitch his “Man of Steel” sequel to Warner Bros. execs and got Spacey to come on board for the next film in the franchise which comes to theaters in 2009.
Spacey would like to stick to the same shooting schedule he had for “Superman Returns” so that his time away from his duties as the artistic director for London’s famed Old Vic Theater is not a lengthy one. The actor was away for six weeks for the first film.
“My priorities have changed,” he admitted in the interview with Variety. “Theater is the No. 1 thing in my life. But I love movies and will continue to make movies when I can.”
Besides his busy stage schedule over the next 8-years, Spacey will soon be seen in the upcoming fantasy comedy “Fred Claus,” and can be heard singing two of Dino’s songs on a Dean Martin tribute CD called “Forever Cool,” due out on August 14th.

Kevin Spacey’s portrayal of Lex Luther was one of the best things about “Superman Returns”. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel.

Superman needs a complete remake, not another sequel from what was already a worn-out 80’s franchise. To date, Christopher Reeve was the quintessential Superman and Gene Hackman was a good Luthor. Time to let it go. Now, 20 years after the last miserable Superman vs Lex Luthor movie (Quest for Peace), we are being asked to watch actors “acting” like the original actors. How about a fresh story? How about a Superman vs someone else movie? Would it be so bad to drop the over dramatic, flamboyant Lex Luthor for a movie. Give us a year one story with a fresh look. The cookie cutter approach to Superman has tuned me out completely. Superman vs Luthor, or Superman vs someone else with Lex Luthor plotting in the background with some kryptonite in his pocket.

As much as I respect and admire Kevin Spacey, his portrayal of Lex Luther in Superman Returns was abysmal. Not Mr Spaceys fault however, the film was very poor (virtually every good part of the film worth watching was in the trailers, an all to common occurence these days) and was about forty minutes too long for the amount of dialogue and plot it contained.
Brandon Routh did make a very convincing Clark Kent / Superman, but the only person who could ever, EVER play Lex Luther is Gene Hackman. There is no other actor alive today who could pull off the seemingly impossible combination of slightly camp, bizarre yet highly threatening presence that Luther embodies.

Kevin Spacey has already said he will come back as Lex if the script is to his liking.

I thought Suerman Returns was great! I’m not that hot for Spacey doing Lex Luthor. Should have got Clancy Brown.
Oh well.

I enjoyed the movie, but they messed it up adding a baby. Now we are stuck with that thing….its about SUPERMAN, not a kid!
The comics never even introduced a baby (not sure about the new stories, I’m an oldschool fan).
As great as the action was in the remake, the story was very bad. It needs more fun and humor, like the classics. I can’t belive I am saying this, but like Bay did in Transformers….he had a great mix of fun and action!
Thats what its all about after all!

Although I agree that Kevin Spacey was a great Lex, I really could go a movie or two without him. Bring on Darkseid, Brainiac, or even Doomsday.
If we have to have Lex, at least give him a Kryptonian battlesuit!
MarrowMan says
It it’s going to be called “Man of Steel” then it should at least in some respect mimic the 1987 relaunch after the Infinite crisis story line, like introduce Metallo, the Silver Banshee, or even Bizarro, Solomon Grundy or whatever.
BTW Luthur never had a Kryptonian suit, he had a suit POWERED with Kryptonite.

I’m with Mike C on this one. Please dear god… Anyone else! This is one of the things that turned me from Supes long ago. It’s ALWAYS Supes versus Lex. Over and over and over and over again. In TV and cinema, all other plots are secondary to Supes versus Lex. BORING!!!

I’d love to see something with Lex more in the background. You know he’s there, and pulling the strings, but not a major character. Although I doubt Spacey would sign on to be in the background. I do hope they start to turn him into a much darker character, get away from Hackman’s more humorous portrayal. Just as he was portrayed in JLU with Clancy Brown’s voice. They should get some ideas from the JLU writers. Those last 2 seasons were amazing.

Maybe he’ll make Metallo or Bizarro to go up against superman.
Mike C says
If they would break from the “Richard Donner” franchise and do a complete re-birth, I would even give a “serious” Luthor another chance. I think they refuse to do a darker more serious Superman for fear of alienating the pre-teen crowd. I think the same thing is now true with the Fantastic Four. Doctor Doom is the FF version of Luthor. He will be in every movie. Even if they aren’t fighting him directly, he’ll be there as a campy distraction to what might normally be a serious film.

hi mi supes fans
well atfirs ive heard rumors about jason being bizarro until the third part of the sequel, other that metallo will be the guy who shoot supermans eye in superman returns, but i really think that there will be brainiac and lex luthor, altough, y prefer the great bizarro and a series of the dead of superman mivies, that will be fanatastic
