Sony Layoffs

June 7, 2007 By Sam Sloan 4 Comments

Because of the overwhelming impact that Nintendo’s Wii console, Sony employees within the vidgaming division of the landmark company will be facing the unemployment line.

Sony’s PS3 has been trounced by Wii at the sales counter and is also trailing behind Microsoft’s Xbox 360. In fact, the only console it is beating is Nintendo’s DS. Sony has lost almost $2 billion ($1.9 billion) in operating costs in its last quarterly earnings statement. Fortunately for Sony its PlayStation 2 is still doing well.

A company spokesman refused to release the number of workers or the plant locations that will be facing layoff, but did assure customers that any games or development projects already underway will not be effected by the letting go of employees.

“In an effort to accurately align the company to meet the changing needs of our customers and or our industry, Sony Computer Entertainment America has found it necessary to analyze our current business and to restructure the company as necessary to continue our standing as the market leader,” Sony said in an official statement.

This is what happens when you price your new console system at about TWICE the competitors’ products……

    Oh, don’t stop there, GazerBeam!

    1. And make developing a game $20 million instead of $5
    2. Include an expensive DVD successor media with your own proprietary format as a way to influence the next gen DVD wars instead of what your customers want
    3. Pitch it to 5% of the population (males 18-30) instead of the entire population (10-18 males and females, 30+ males and females).
    4. When people complain about the high cost, tell them they should “get a second job to afford it”.
    5. Insult your rivals inclusion of motion sensor technology as a fad.
    6. At the last minute, replace a standard technology (rumble) and insert motion sensitive technology, and tell people you were going to do that the entire time.

Now, personally, I *do* plan on buying a PS3 someday, because some of the games such as Metal Gear Solid, Trusty Bell (mmm – Chopan based RPG), and others are on my list. But I’m going to wait until the price drops down to something reasonable.

In a way, this is good for Sony. Nintendo got arrogant and greedy, and got knocked off their perch. Sony got arrogant and greedy, and is being knocked off of theirs. Microsoft has *always* been arrogant and greedy, which explains why the Xbox series has lost nearly $6 billion so far, and counting….

The PS3 is a good machine, overall, but it was also something I had to set aside funds over a few months to justify. As compared to picking up a PSP, DS, and Wii without a moment’s hesitation, based on the very affordable price and unique features.

Well I was impressed with the build quality of the PS3 except for the controller..it really feels flimsy in the hands.

I haven’t been impressed with the software released so far in Europe. I’ve ended up getting some classic PS2 games (Ico, God of War, and The Mark of Kri) to play on the PS3.
