Movie Talk: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is already beginning to look like the must see flick for 2007. We explain why. Hollywood has finally decided to tackle a remake of a 60-year old classic fantasy driven comedy. Mike Myers looks like Samuel Goldwyn Jr.’s hand-picked candidate to try and fill the shoes of the late-great Danny Kaye for “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”.
TV Talk:
We have an update to last week’s story concerning an ABC decision about its new fall entry “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. The startup date and time for Fox’s “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” has been announced and a rumor about Glau’s Terminator performance. Fans of the “Masters of Horror” Showtime venue will be happy with the news we have about the anthology show. Ron Moore is not real optimistic about the future of his dream “Caprica”.
Interview: Devin Pike, the global coordinator of the Can’t Stop the Serenity charity screenings, is this week’s guest on this week’s “Slice of SciFi”. This event, now in its second year, serves as a fundraiser for Equality Now, an organization formed to address the gender disparity in the human rights movement, which sometimes tends to dismiss violations as being “cultural” or “private”… issues such as domestic violence, rape, female genital mutilation, trafficking, and reproductive rights are not part of the agendas of other established human rights organizations.
Equality Now fights for those very important rights and seeks to see them addressed for the sake of all life. Through the mobilization of public pressure and growing public awareness from such programs as “Can’t Stop the Serenity,” Equality Now is able to raise the monies and attention needed to help thwart these terrible crimes against humanity.
“Can’t Stop the Serenity” is a worldwide charity event, and is fully supported by “Firefly” and “Serenity” creator Joss Whedon, and in his honor the screenings are scheduled every year around his birthday, June 23rd.
Our Slice of SciFi on-air team (Summer Brooks, Mike Mennenga, Brian Brown and Tim Adamec), will be supporting and helping the AZ Browncoats with the Tempe screening on June 21, and Summer and Brian will also be hosting the Tucson screening on June 23, so if you live in these viewing areas, come out and join us!
Future Talk:
The brother directing and producing team of Allen and Albert Hughes have returned to making big screen features after a 6 year absence and hope to make another splash with three new films: A serial killer flick called “The Ice Man,” a big screen adaptation of David Carradine’s TV character from “Kung Fu,” and the most promising, a SF film called “Book of Eli,” which we take a closer look at in this segment of the show.

Mike certainly saved the day for this episode. Until his skilled engineering hands went to work, except for the interview with Devin, it was a total disaster. That is why Mike is our in-the-booth GOD! He can turn total crap into an easier-to-swallow pile of palpable listening.
And while you guys were here on my coast, I was in Cali! Star Wars 4ever! And your side of the slab ain’t half bad might I say.
By next Balticon, I think I’m going to try to attend. Our own little slice of the Podcast world (name=link) should still be going strong and I’ll have to represent.
Alas, I just got word from Mike that XM Radio rejected this show for a lack of professionalism.
Because of this, the Can’t Stop the Serenity charity screenings will not get the publicity push we’d hoped to provide them by giving them airtime on XM.
Maybe this will drive home to some people that what we do here is not a hobby and not a joke.
No chance of just resubmitting only the interview to XM, is there?
Unfortunately, no. The show had to get to XM today in order to air before the screenings started the week of the 18th.
The new arrangement with XM might cut down that lag time, but for now, we’ve missed the opportunity to get some air time for the charity.
That sucks. I’m really sorry to hear it.

Now, perhaps everyone can appreciate why, as the show’s content producer, I was livid and seeing red when all that went down at Balticon. I saw this coming and since I wasn’t there in Baltimore, couldn’t stop it. I can guarantee that this will never happen again – not on my watch. I will never allow a show like that to ever see the light of day again.
I have been doing this for many years, worked in radio for quite some time and always worked hard to put out a professional product because, not only was our own reputations as broadcasters on the line with each show, the entire corporation that owned and ran our production was also on trial. That is why it is extremely important to remember that…yes, we can have fun, we can be loose, but we must always remain professional pod/broadcasters. There is more at stake here than our own show.
I am actually glad that XM rejected the show, I was already too embarassed by it as it was. I only wish we hadn’t of even submitted it to them and would have gone with a repeat and played the “Can’t Stop the Serenity” interview with Devin as just a stand alone special podcast.
Kids, we learn from this, move on and never — NEVER, let it happen again.
