J.R.R. Tolkien’s Son Completes Father’s Unfinished Novel

March 27, 2007 By Michael Hickerson 4 Comments

Despite having shuffled off this mortal coil a few decades ago, popular fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien will hit the” just published” section of the bookstore next month.

His son, Christopher Tolkien, found and completed an unfinished work, “The Children of Hurin,” according to BBC News. This fantasy novel was abandoned by the elder Tolkien in 1918. Christopher found the unfinished manusript and has been working on completing it for over 30 years.

“The Children of Hurin” is part of the “Lord of the Rings” universe and takes place before the events chronicled in “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Excerpts of the novel have been published before, but this is the first time that various elements, threads and stories have been brought together in a complete novel.

The book also features illustrations by Alan Lee, the Oscar-winning artist from the film adapation of “The Return of the King.”

This is not the first time that Christopher has worked with his father. Christopher previously found and published other “Lord of the Rings” material left incomplete by his father in “The Silmarillion” and “The Unfinished Tales of Middle Earth.” Christopher also published the 12-volume “History of Middle Earth” in the early- to mid-80’s.

“The Children of Hurin” hits a bookstore near you in April.

“and takes place before the events chronicled in “The Fellowship of the Ring.”

yes indeed, well before. The “The Children of Hurin” takes place before the end of the First Age.

The tale of Turin Turambar and Nienor is dark and tragic ain’t it?

Just wondering if anyone knows of any fan clubs for LOTR or how to get a hold of someone for rights to produce a faceplate custom made for LOTR! Thanks brad
