The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Warner Brothers is in the process of acquiring another script for a Wonder Woman film to be penned by relative newcomers Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland. The studio still has its current deal with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”/”Firefly” creator Joss Whedon to write and direct a film based on the DC Comics character in the mix.
The difference between the two scripts will be time-zone related. Whedon’s story is set in the 21st Century while the competing script is to be set during World War II.
The trade paper has indicated that the reason Warner has opted two scripts has more to do with protecting itself against legalities that could ensue from script similarities and not from the studio’s concern or lack thereof of Whedon’s ability to provide a winning storyline. This move by Warner should help keep the competing script off the market, giving time for one or the other to reach full development without impediment.
The big question is which script will win the final nod. While some execs at the studio have become fond of the Jennison/Strickland idea, producer Joel Silver has indicated that he is not the least bit interested in going backward and placing Wonder Woman in a period set. His desire is to make the character relevant to today’s audience of ticket buyers, an idea on which Whedon and Silver Pictures agree.

I say, produce BOTH scripts… with different actresses, and have Wonder Woman’s mother in the “modern” version (Hyppolita) mention that she was Wonder Woman in the 40’s… just like in the comics! … hey, a fanboy can always dream!

Joss Whedon is the best guy to bring WW to the big screen. I hope they dont mess this up….
I’m going with cautious optimism on this one, and believe what the reporting is saying. They’re buying the script because it is a good script, and they don’t want legal issues to arise. A good pre-emptive move that can also bag WB some fresh (read: cheap) writing talent.
Joss’s WW will be brought to the screen in the end.
